Half-dozen Common Questions Answered [UPDATED]

These are the top six questions I’ve been asked this week regarding technology.
1. Text, video, and picture messaging doesn’t work: I have WiFi and the internet works, but messaging doesn’t…?
This is usually asked by smartphone owners: however your phone can use WiFi to go on the internet, and it’s the same internet experience, text, video and picture messaging can only be sent or received over the cellular network (unless you’re sending them to an email address, but I’m talking about phone-phone messaging). There are some emerging technologies where you get a “micro cell”, a device that can be integrated in to a router, or can be plugged into your modem (cable, DSL; doesn’t matter), creates a small personal cellular site. The most notable implementation of this is by AT&T, the “AT&T microcell.”
2. Why can’t I use my cell phone to connect the iPad to wireless data?
This question has been posed a lot to me in the last week since the iPad announcement, only by poeple who have smartphones (Blackberry, iPhone, or Android): the fact is that all of these phones are capable of sharing their data with other devices, called “tethering,” however:
iPhones will only tether to other computers; Mac and Windows only (sorry, your Ubuntu/other Linux netbook won’t work). Or you can jailbreak your iPhone and use an (illegal!) app like xx or xx and tether… if the iPad can create (let alone join) a computer-to-computer network (called an “adhoc” network).
The Androids can tether, but going the legit way, you will have to pay [INSERT CARRIER HERE] more money for a separate data plan even though you don’t use near all of your current data plan… yes, I know they’re “buttheads.” However there are apps you can use, they cost money, and the reliability of them varies. You’re using the phone that will probably get you closest to a cheap iPad.
The Blackberry can tether, but unless you purchase tetherberry for $58 CAD or pay [INSERT CARRIER HERE] for a separate tethering data plan, you’re SOL.
There’s another problem: as of yet, the WiFi-only iPad can only use WiFi tethering: that means that you will need to tether via WiFi. This could cause a problem if you’re not using a jailbroken iPhone with an app like xx or an Android phone with xx.

In response to a comment from Billy, I should clarify. The iPad does indeed do 3G cellular data. However it requires it’s own cellular account and can’t share your cell phone data (some carriers have plans where a phone and data device such as a laptop card can share a data allotment, but that isn’t what I’m referring to). I was responding in the context of those who don’t want to pay another (minimum $15/mo) data fee.

3. Can you upgrade my iPhone?
Yes: other’s can upgrade your iPhone to the latest version. This is a common question from my peers who use dial-up (yes, there are still places sans broadband in this day and age). The typical iPhone update is ~300MB, or about 12+ hours of solid dial-up downloading. Other iTunes users can update your phone provided that you’ve already sync’d the iPhone (or iPod touch) with your computer. Also, if you go to restore your phone to factory settings (in iTunes) then you will have to download the firmware or let me do it. Hint: if you’ve jailbroken your phone, it would make the updaters’ life a lot easier!
4. Why are my iPhone/iPod Touch apps crashing/not opening/running slow/other?
This happens to me all the time! The simple solution: you reboot your phone. Unlock your device to the home screen, hold the power button (at the top of the device) until you get the “slide to power off” notification, slide it. Once the screen has gone blank, wait a few seconds, then press and hold the power button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo.
5. Why are my iPhone/iPod Touch apps wiggling on my home screen?!?!
You pressed and held your finger on an app icon, this puts your phone in a mode which allows you to relocate the icons; when the icons are wiggling you can tap and drag them to any position on the many home screens. To stop them from wiggling and exit the relocation mode, press the menu/home button (the circular button with a picture of a square on it on the front of the device).
6. Is it possible to download Youtube video to your iPod/iPhone/iPod Touch?
Assuming your iPod has the ability to play videos (the fat-nano or better, the iPod 5th gen or better, and any iPod touch or iPhone) you can. On Mac OS X you can use a native application such as TubeTV (the best Mac way I’ve found). In Tube TV you go into the preferences and select the quality you want. In general, select the name of your device. If you’re on an iPhone, select the option that is not ‘cellular’. This will take care of downloading and converting the video for your iPod. You then just click-and-drag the video files to your iTunes library and make sure that movie syncing is enabled on your iPod (the movies tab when your iPod is plugged in). There is also Podtube available. You could also use Tooble, another program I’ve used to download Youtube videos. Tooble is freemium: you can download videos for free from Youtube, or upgrade to the “Pro” version for more features, check out the site for a full feature list. All three of these are free.
On Windows there isn’t as much variety as on the Mac; the only program I’ve grown to trust for Youtube on Windows->iPod/iPhone is the Windows version of Tooble. Same as Mac, it’s free, but you get more features for the ~$20 Pro version.

In response to Billy, I will add the Orbit Video downloader is a viable, and recommended by him and CNet Download.com, option for downloading Youtube videos for your iPhone or iPod.

Solution to AT&T Data Usage Problems

These are my thoughts on AT&T’s issue with smart phone data usage. If you don’t know much about me; I am Brad Arsenault of Nova Scotia, Canada. I am an avid iPhone user.
I am probably not wrong in making the assumption that most Americans don’t fully understand other cellular data model from around the world, and I’d like to illuminate the Canadian cellular service model in hopes that it will prevent more issue from coming. I know that Rogers isn’t a stellar cellular provider, but I challenge me to show me one that is.
My current understanding of AT&T’s cellular data model is this: you pay a flat rate for unlimited wireless data usage. With the original iPhone that was $30/mo, then when the new iPhone 3G was released you had to upgrade to a $35/mo service to get access to 3G service. I take this to mean that you pay one tier for EDGE/GPRS and another for 3G (ignoring 3G coverage).
Here’s how the Canadian system works: you sign up for a data contract and have two basic options:
- Fixed amounts of data for a fixed rate. Using more than your allotment results in an overage by the MB. *Rogers only
- Flex rate plans. You advance through definite tiers of data quantity, priced at definite amounts. No overages. These tend to be a premium on fixed amounts of data. *Rogers, Telus, or Bell
I’ve found that in data-only plans (where you purchase a voice and a data plan separate from each other) the data pricing (for smart phones, Blackberrys are excluded from this category by some carriers) goes as follows (Rogers plan stated):
- $25 – 500MB fixed
- $30 – 500 flex rate, 1GB fixed
- $35 – 1GB flex
- $50 – flex 2GB
- $60 – 3GB fixed
- $65 – 3GB flex
- $80 – 5GB fixed
- $85 – 5GB flex
Canada and the US are very similar, correct? There are similar mobile services to be enjoyed, correct? The cultues of smart phone use are very similar in the US and Canada, correct? Then it can be assumed that Canadian and American “data hogs” use approximately the same amount of data, correct? Rogers has stated that 4% of their smartphone customers exceed data usage of 500MB/mo. –meaning in a room of 100 people (selected at random) only 4 people would have used more than 500MB, and 96 having used <500MB.
I can presume that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are all looking into this model, however if it would sell, they’d need ads out the wazoo to prove that they aren’t swindling customers AND can’t apply it to current contracts (whether renewing customers would be forced into this pricing plan? No idea.)
The problem is that I’m proposing anti-net-neutrality. And that could be true, same with I could be proposing limitations that would limit clients from accessing web content (such as TWiT; Leo Laporte having said many times that net-neutrality is good because it doesn’t limit people from consuming his and other content). But I’m not. It’s just like saying that having limited amounts of minutes on a cellular voice plan will destroy families by not allowing people to reasonably keep in contact, especially long-distance families. Remember that data could be looked at in the same light as voice is.
Let’s look at the voice system: there are landlines and cellular phones. They are interconnected, provide a common ringtone, and also provide the same dialing system. The difference being that cellular phones are accessible anywhere where as to use your landline you must be near it. Another difference is that landlines phones have unlimited local calling, cell phones don’t (typically). This has rarely been called on as a question of debate. This could be debated as talk-neutrality; “why are there two tiers of voice? –landline and mobile.”
Are there really two tiers of voice? Yes, because of human behavior. When was the last time you talked for hours on end around town on a phone? (let’s ignore vacations, hotel stays, and talking on a cell phone at home.) When was the last time you called somebody on your landline to ask them if they wanted you to pick up a coffee on the way home? For me, that second one, never. The tiers of voice have been created by design, especially where cell phones only started sounding decent since the introduction of UMTS/3G.
Lately AT&T and Rogers (and some other carriers) have introduced products which allow you to chat using VOiP at home; Rogers calls this “Home Calling Zone” and AT&T calls this the Microcell. Both of these use your internet connection to carry voice to the call servers. In both cases you get reduced long-distance rates and unlimited local calling (I don’t know about AT&T, but Roger’s charges $15/mo + hardware for this service; $25/mo for unlimited Canada-wide calling). Why are these cheaper than using the cellular towers? Because you are keeping your voice off of the towers. Infrastructure. Let’s apply the same process to smart phone data.
Let’s think in this new mindset, using the infrastructure of least resistance: when you’re at home you’re connected to WiFi for your data, and this is probably faster than any 3G you can get now. When you go to get a coffee you leave your home WiFi as you leave the driveway and you’re now on the cellular network. When you get to Starbucks you connect to their WiFi which AT&T has graciously given to you for free as part of your cellular package. You return home without having used nearly as much data as you would have before, and got better data speeds. This system works, especially if you only get EDGE/GPRS/1x. I’m not saying to boycott the cellular towers entirely, just be more frugal with your bits.
Thinking of two tiers again; yes, there are two tiers for data–landline and mobile, just like voice. Having mobile more limited than landline probably won’t matter, unless we go to an Australian-like data model where ALL data is capped, tiered, throttled, and expen$ive. There needs to be some balance, and I think Canada happens to be it.
Just my thoughts.
Bell & Telus HSPA+ Network

Last October two of Canada’s three major national wireless providers, Bell (BCE Inc) and Telus Mobility, announced a joint venture to build a shared next-generation network. This partnership started in 2001 and was supposed to increase competition against Rogers Wireless (Canada’s #1 wireless carrier by subscribers), since 2001 Telus and Bell have erected shared towers, specifically in the Atlantic Canada region. Because of the shared network Bell and Telus were able to introduce 1xRTT in the early part of the decade and EVDO in 2005 very rapidly. Telus and Bell operate CDMA networks (CDMA-2000 with 1X and EVDO support to be specific). However that seemed to be changing in October of last year (2008). [read this for more information]
In October of 2008 Bell and Telus announced that they would be building a shared next-generation network, using HSPA+. Let’s take that piece by piece:
- Bell and Telus are currently CDMA carriers
- EVDO is the 3G data network for CDMA
- HSPA+ is a 3G GSM-based technology
- Verizon uses CDMA in the US
- Rogers Wireless currently operates Canada’s only GSM network (ATT, T-Mobile in the US)
- Rogers has HSPA+ sectors in major Canadian centers, 3G in most major centers, and EDGE covering the remaining area

I just did a Speedtest today using Roger’s 3G in the HRM (results here) and found that Speedtest.net will soon perform it’s 1 billionth Speedtest!
Adventures in iPhone: Day 6

I have had an iPhone for six days now and have loved every minute it of it, with the exception of my experience with the Rogers dealer I went to in Dartmouth Crossing not knowing of their $30 data plan for 6GB of data (as has been advertised on their site for Android phones and for both of the iPhone releases as a time-limited deal). it wasn’t too big of a deal though, the dealer who activated me gave me the number to the Dealer Service/Help line, after spending nearly an hour trying to get the plan worked out with this line and the staff in the store (the question “can an iPhone be activated like that?” was commonly used during my visit). When I got home I called the number on it and had my issue solved in under ten minutes flat (and that’s including authenticating my account, however at the end he said “I’m not sure where you got this number from, but please don’t call it again.”)
I should say that the overall experience was great! I was out of the store after more than two hours (I’m a new Rogers customer) and on my way to spend my day in Halifax. All that I can say is that 3G is awesome, I was able to burn through more than 200MB in <3hrs without trying. The speed of 3G may as well have been my home network because pages rendered over the 3G as fast as they rendered on my iPod Touch at home. I used RSS Player to download podcasts at 700KBps inside of Mic Mac Mall… the reception was everywhere, even inside of Costco.
But then I drove home. I lost 3G after about 15 minutes on the highway. So for most of my time with iPhone I will be using EDGE, which doesn’t bother me as much as I had thought. EDGE (with at least 4 bars) seems to have enough bandwidth to listen to TWiT.am or Last.fm, or to download email, check Twitter, or browse the web (albeit for a limited time before frustration sets in). My average speed (as determined by the SpeedTest.net app) is about 120kbps down and 140kbps up. Not so bad.
So in the past (almost) week I’ve done a lot with this phone that I’ve never been able to do before. Given that I’m not a complete virgin to the iPhone experience as I’ve had an iPod Touch for more than a year leading up to this… but there’s no comparison. Using the $1.99 app AutoStitch I made panoramas, something that I last did in 1998 on an 800MHz computer by hand, and this app does it all for you. The other app I’ve really got into is TweetReel, which is a combo-$2.99 app and online service that allows you to record a video or take a picture on your iPhone, upload it to the service and Tweet a link to the video. The quality isn’t so bad, here is a test I did this morning with it.

Another app I will definitely play with is called RK_Free (short for Run Keeper), which you use when you’re running, biking, or another outdoor activity where you would like to see your speed, distance, and a map of where you’ve been. This is a free version of the app and is limited to storing five runs. This is intended for the 3G/3GS, and according to the app information, isn’t accurate on other iPhones or the iPod Touches. The other issue I’ve had is in areas of limited GPS signal (on the screen as ‘poor signal strength’) it misreports my location and stated that I was travelling 165KM/h for a period of time and ruined the results for that bike session. But overall is a great app, especially because it’s free.
The other utility I’ve been playing with is MobileMe, or at least a free trial, and I love the push email, in fact I would have all of my mail be push, but $109 CAD/yr for it… I don’t think so. So I’ve also heard that Yahoo mail does push (for free!)… so I wondered what the difference in cost would mean, also whether Apple would truly allow someone else to do push for free. So I did a simple test, send a message from my GMail account to both addresses, with exactly 1 byte of data on each (lorem ispum) to see which one is faster responding. Here are the averages:
- Over Wifi MobileMe took <2 seconds to deliver the message and over EDGE, took 8 seconds.
- Yahoo took 10 minutes to deliver over Wifi, and over EDGE took 10 minutes and 31 seconds.
From what I can tell from this, Yahoo might as well not offer ‘Push’ for the extra server capacity it requires and just stick with the typical 15 minute-fetch cycle.
This is the best internet device-iPod-phone I’ve ever used.
